Brokeback Mountain (2005)2005

Brokeback Mountain (2005) was the highest grossing gay-themed drama in cinematic history. Two of the most talented up and coming actors in Hollywood at the time, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, brought Annie Proulx's tragic love story to life. Thanks to the University of Nebraska Press' edition of The Brokeback Book: From Story to Cultural Phenomenon, Michael Silverblatt's exclusive interview with Proulx is finally in print for the scholar, fan, critic, or other curious minds to enjoy. Silverblatt states that Brokeback Mountain was "one of these kind of, I think, heavenly events for a writer when a movie stays true and fairly close to the range of the work," which is to say that unlike most generic Hollywood films, he believes the film captures both the essence and truth of Proulx's short story through the amazing portrayal of the two star-crossed lovers and the powerful screenplay by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana. The Brokeback Book builds on earlier debates by novelist David Leavitt, critic Daniel Mendelsohn, producer James Schamus, and film reviewer Kenneth Turan with new and noteworthy interpretations of the Brokeback phenomenon and its legacy.
